Dude! I got a Dell!
My computer was dying and Dell was having a sale, so after months of delays I finally broke down and purchased the E521 with AMD X2 and a 22" screen. It's a pretty good computer, very quiet. The only drag was the failed BIOS update that killed it. Yep, paper weight. I think Windows Vista allowed the BIOS to be erased, but didn't allow it to be rewritten.
Dell support was good, made no fuss about the BIOS update and setup for me to receive on-site service to replace the motherboard. It's down hill from there, it was next day service and the tech assigned to me called to schedule a window. He didn't show up. Called half an hour after the two hour window to say his car was "broken." Right, I've heard that somewhere before. He made the second appointment and replaced the board. The guy was pretty ruff with the parts and lost a screw in the computer, which I had to take out after he left. Dell support gets a satisfactory grade in my book, very good phone support with on-site service outsourced to a company with overworked techs.
(The BIOS that came with the replacement board was even older then what I had before. But everything is working fine now, so no more BIOS updates for me, at least not on a Dell.)
Update: The BIOS update that killed my motherboard is no longer on the Dell site, only previous versions are available. Hmm...

SimpleShare 250GB NAS
I recently purchased a SimpleShare 250GB NAS from SimpleTech. It was just a little more than getting a 250GB drive with a USB enclosure, so I figured why not. This way I don't have to put it near my computer like the other USB drives. And so far so good, this thing runs linux and after some research I found OpenMSS. It appears that the Maxtor Shared Storage has the same basic hardware as the SimpleShare and there is a (not very active, but existing) community for it. After digging in their forum and reading posts from some very smart people I was able to build my own firmware and install some programs. Pretty cool stuff, but unfortunately I'm probably just going to use it as storage, but I just feel better knowing it can do much more. If anyone is interested, the v1.09 firmware I built can be downloaded here. And if you search the OpenMSS forums, you will be able to find a modified v1.07 firmware with telnet. But I prefer v1.09 because it allows the disk to spin down.

New Photos
It's been a while since the last update, I'm just lazy. But I did put up some photos from a few trips: North South Lake, Harris Lake, Vermont, Mount Snow at Vermont, and Kissena Park (it's only queens, but still a trip).

Five Boro Bike Tour
I took part in my first Five Boro Bike Tour today. Around 39 miles on every borough in New York City, they closed off streets, parks, bridges and highways for biking. It was pretty nice riding my bike on the highway I usually drive on. Took me around 5 hours to finish. That's very good time for me seeing how I've never been on a bike for more than 3 hours, ever. My behind is feeling it right now. Here's a picture of me in my orange getup for the ride.

Utah
I've been back from my trip to Utah for over a week and still too lazy to post pictures. Hopefully I'll get in the mood to look over hundreds of photos to pick out good ones to put up. The snow was good in Utah, it is the best snow on earth.

The Bodies!
I went to see Bodies The Exhibition yesterday. It was pretty interesting, just like a Discovery channel show except I'm there to see everything. My favorite part were the blood vessels, it was kind of like an aquarium, just need to add fish. Someone told me all the bodies were chinese, don't know if that's true but if it is I'd question how they got the bodies. Or maybe it's just cheaper to import from China, like everything else. Beef jerky anyone?

Arcade Cabinet
My friend and I recently played with the idea of building an arcade cabinet, and since it seemed like fun and we had nothing better to do we went ahead with that idea. We first got ourselves an X-Arcade for the joystick, then we built the cabinet around it. You can take a look at the arcade cabinet pictures in the photo gallery to see the process and the finished product. It's far from perfect, but we made it, it works, and we had fun doing it. So it's all good.
